John 2:9-11 (NIVUK)
They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realise where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, ‘Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.’
11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
Jesus is just brilliant, isn’t he. God doesn’t just provide wine because they’ve run out, but the best wine. His is not a begrudging love, but a generous love that gives above and beyond what is required or expected. Holding this alongside verse 11 is interesting, with its observation that through these signs he revealed his glory. These signs don’t just reveal that he is God, but also the kind of god he is.
Father, Son and Spirit, we praise you for your glorious love! May we as your children also be signs to you through our generosity.
