John 3:1-3 (NIVUK)
1 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, ‘Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.’
3 Jesus replied, ‘Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.’
Time and time again, the apostle John (not to be confused with John the Baptist) retells the stories in his Gospel in such a way as to get across his main point as stated in John 20:31, ‘...that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.‘ He does it here at the start of this significant chapter through Nicodemus’ words. Jesus, he says, could only do what he was doing if God were with him – and remember, Nicodemus is an important Jewish leader and so his words have weight. In fact, John has Jesus take it further, Nicodemus would be unable to recognise this if God wasn’t at work in his life as well.
Thank you Father for all you have done and are doing through sending Jesus. Thank you too for the Spirit’s work in our lives that means we can recognise him for who he is.
