Serving Jesus in Our Community

Bible Notes

John 5:14 (06.02.25)

John 5:14
“Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, ‘See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.’”

‘Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.’ Was Jesus saying that the man’s lameness was the result of sin, 38 years earlier? In the case of the blind man in ch.9, Jesus clearly says it was not because of any sin. Was it different for the lame man here? I’m not sure. But for 38 years his lameness had made him incapable of doing many of the worst kind of sins. Now that his limitations were removed, Jesus needed to warn him about sins which had suddenly become possible. If we have health and strength, or a measure of prosperity, or the benefits of technology such as internet access, we need to beware of the temptations we may be exposed to. The more freedom and power and wealth we have, the more opportunities for sin will come our way.

Lord, you have made us whole. Help us to live for you, transformed from the inside out.
