John 5:45-47 (07.02.25)

John 5:45-47
“But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set. 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”

When Jesus says ‘Moses wrote of me’, commentators usually point to Deuteronomy 18.15-20 where Moses wrote that God would raise up ‘a prophet like me’. On the road to Emmaus in Luke 24.27, we read that “beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.” I doubt that Deuteronomy 18 was the only Scripture Jesus expounded in this conversation.

I would love to know how Jesus applied all of Moses’ teaching to himself. What was it about Moses’ writings that the Jewish leaders whom Jesus addresses in John 5.47 failed to believe? When we read the Old Testament, let us endeavour to see that it all points to Jesus.

Lord Jesus, thank-you for the riches of the Old Testament as well as the New, showing us in prophecy and in pictures ever more of your person and work.
