Psalm 85:1-3,10
“You, Lord, showed favour to your land; you restored the fortunes of Jacob.
2 You forgave the iniquity of your people and covered all their sins.
3 You set aside all your wrath and turned from your fierce anger.” …
10 “Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss each other.”
We have a God who is at the same time righteous and merciful. He is a God of justice, yet his desire is to forgive sin, such as that of the woman in the story we heard on Sunday. How can love and faithfulness meet? How can righteousness and peace kiss? The answer lies in the God who provides himself a lamb for an offering (see Genesis 22). This was ultimately fulfilled in the cross of Jesus, where God’s justice and mercy came together.
Father God, thank-you that your righteousness and your grace joined forces on the cross, so that sinners could find peace with you while our sin is wiped clean.
