Romans 5:20-6:1-2
“But where sin increased, grace increased all the more….1 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning, so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?”
Many of the early church fathers were worried that the story of the woman caught in adultery in John 8 might encourage people to think that it’s OK to commit such sins. God is indeed very forgiving, but we can only expect forgiveness if we truly repent and are willing to live differently in future. Jesus did not say to the woman, ‘It doesn’t really matter how much you sin, God will always forgive you.’ What he actually said was, “Go and leave your life of sin.”
Lord, we thank you for your grace to undeserving sinners. May we never act as if you don’t care about how much we sin.
