John 13:6-8 NIV
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
As Christians, having accepted Jesus’ call for us to put others before ourselves, it can sometimes be hard to accept others serving us – something Peter struggled with here as well as the concept that this is something that Jesus should do. But this is how the church is called to be, a community of mutually serving and encouraging people, serving and relying on each other. Sometimes for others to live like Christ we have to accept their service. Sometimes we have to serve them.
Jesus, help us to serve and be served.
