Serving Jesus in Our Community

Bible Notes

Wednesday 13th November 2013

Reading: Luke 13:20-21
20 Again he asked, ‘What shall I compare the kingdom of God to? 21 It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about thirty kilograms of flour until it worked all through the dough.’

Thought for Reflection: Here is a parable amongst other things about the effectiveness of the church at work in the frontlines of its members. Yeast is unseen. A small pinch spread throughout the dough is hardly noticed – until that is the dough is cooked. Still the yeast may lie unseen, but its effects are there for all to see as this small pinch causes the bread to rise. So it is with the church as we spread throughout our communities. There may not be so many of us, we may not be recognized for what we’re doing, but through our deeds and words as we work of God we can transform the world we live in. Incidentally, yeast only works if it is spread out…

Prayer: Lord, help us to see the ways in which you are working through us to transform our communities!
