Ruth 4:9 (NIVUK)
9 Then Boaz announced to the elders and all the people, ‘Today you are witnesses that I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelek, Kilion and Mahlon. 10 I have also acquired Ruth the Moabite, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property, so that his name will not disappear from among his family or from his home town. Today you are witnesses!’
Boaz acts decisively to ensure that his family land and name (through Elimilek) aren’t lost. To do this he has to buy back the land and marry Ruth – it is an act of commitment which comes with a cost, which he is willing to pay. Again this reflects Christ, who decisively acts as our Guardian Redeemer to keep us in his family and ensure we are part of God’s Kingdom. For Christ, the cost was his life.
Jesus, thank you that you were willing to buy me back despite the cost. May my life today be my response.
