Bible Notes

Luke 1:38 (18.01.19)

Giovanni Battista Salvi da Sassoferrato [Public domain]

On Sunday morning Ben started a series going through Matthew and he started with the genealogy of Jesus. This week in the notes we are looking at some of the people in that genealogy – many of the people have stories that are quite fascinating – worth a look!!

Luke 1:38 NIV
[38] “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

The last of this weeks members of the genealogy of Jesus is Mary – the young woman whose life was about to be dramatically and terribly changed – its easy for us to look back and see what a privilege and honour God bestowed upon her but just at that moment for her it may have looked pretty devastating! How do we face dire upheaval, sickness, financial pressure, relationship problems or whatever else we are going through? Can we learn from Mary to look to God and accept that we are his – as Ben reminded us on Sunday, a part of his family – and so to look for his hand in our daily life!

Luke 1:46-50 NIV
[46] And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord [47] and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, [48] for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, [49] for the Mighty One has done great things for me—holy is his name. [50] His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.
