Serving Jesus in Our Community

Bible Notes

Matthew 26:36-39 (14.10.19)

Matthew 26:36-39 NIV
Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” [37] He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. [38] Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” [39] Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

Superhero movies are all the rage at the moment, and often Jesus can seem a little like a Marvel character, striding across the land doing mighty acts with heroic speeches to back them up. It can be easy to see him as different from us, not one of us. God? Yes. Human? Sort of, but not really, not like me. But here we have the clearest insight into his humanity. Fear, sorrow, confusion, friendship, loneliness, desire. Jesus really did become one of us in every way.

One of us in every way and faithful in every aspect. Jesus, we might fall asleep, but you never let us down!
