Bible Notes

Matthew 27:45-46 (24.10.19)

Matthew 27:45-46 NIV
From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. [46] About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).

At first sight, these have to be some of the most dreadful words in the Bible, the Son abandoned by the Father. But if you read on in Psalm 22 which Jesus is quoting, in fact these are words of great hope. The Psalmist feels abandoned, his life draining from him, but despite this he trusts God to rescue him. In fact the Psalmist believes that his situation will turn around and he will declare God’s praise to his people for what he has done for him. Now that is faith!

Psalm 22:22-24 NIV
I will declare your name to my people; in the assembly I will praise you. [23] You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel! [24] For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help.

Thank you Father that you do not abandon your children.
