Bible Notes

James 1:22-25 (17.06.20)

This week we’re continuing to reflect on the scripture behind the topics explored on Sunday morning.

James 1:22-25 NIV
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. [23] Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror [24] and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. [25] But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.

‘The perfect law that gives freedom’; this phrase leapt out at me as I read this passage in my daily reading yesterday. The Bible is written to liberate and set people free, doesn’t this make it the perfect message for today as people struggle with lockdown and with questions around equality and memories of slavery? God wants us to be free, he’s made us to be free and to bring freedom. But here’s the thing. We can’t celebrate this message and do nothing about it. As we read it and as we experience it, it calls us to respond, to act. What can you do to be God’s message of liberation?

God who brought your people out from slavery to Pharaoh and slavery to sin, show us what we can do to help set people free today.

Ps. Don’t forget to pray for and promote the Alpha Course…
