1 Samuel 3:1-5 (20.07.20

God speaks but often in ways we do not recognise! We have to learn to listen and to hear what he is saying – the history of God’s relationship with his people has often been marked by a bit of deafness!!

1 Samuel 3:1-5 NIV
[1] The boy Samuel ministered before the Lord under Eli. In those days the word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions. [2] One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. [3] The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the Lord, where the ark of God was. [4] Then the Lord called Samuel. Samuel answered, “Here I am. ” [5] And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.

In Samuel’s day “there were not many visions” and so he did not expect God to speak to him! He was only a boy and he lived with Eli who was the priest and so, Samuel would have thought, much closer to God and much more important. God does not look on people like we do and Samuel was the one he was calling – just an unimportant, young boy but precious to God and a part of his plan. Today, we may feel unimportant, and not expect to hear God’s call but listen and look for him – in his eyes, you are precious and valuable.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Come unto Me and rest;
Lay down, thou weary one, lay down
Thy head upon My breast.”
I came to Jesus as I was,
Weary and worn and sad;
I found in Him a resting place,
And He has made me glad.
