Genesis 1:27-28 NIV
So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground. ”
Humanity are given the task of subduing the earth and ruling over it. In the next verse they’re also told that every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it is for their food. This sounds as if the earth is there for them to do with as they wish, for their benefit and plunder. But wait a minute, back up a verse, we’re made in his image, this means that we should rule over the earth as he does, and haven’t we seen so far this week that this is with love and care, to delight in it not destroy it?
Father help us to see this planet and all that lives on it as you do, and learn to rule over it as you do too.
