Serving Jesus in Our Community

Bible Notes

Psalm 122:6-9 (13.05.21)

Psalm 122:6-9
6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
“May those who love you prosper.
7     May there be peace inside your walls
and safety in your palaces.”
8 For the sake of my relatives and friends
I say to Jerusalem, “Peace be with you!”
9 For the sake of the house of the Lord our God
I pray for your prosperity.

What do we pray about when we pray? Who do we pray for?  Psalm 122 encourages us not to just pray for ourselves and the church, but to pray for the peace and prosperity of the world around us. This is both good for the world around us, and it is good for us to – if the world around us is at peace, then we will be at peace, we are not separate from the world around us, but intimately part of it and affected by it. It’s also an act of mission, a way of supporting the world and sharing God’s love with it.

Here’s a thought, why not grab a newspaper or turn to a news website and read up on the local news is. Then take some time to pray for some of the issues and needs it raises. Let us not also miss the obvious application, let’s pray for peace in Israel / Palestine in these troubled times as well.
