1 John 2:24-25
24 As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is what he promised us—eternal life.
What an astonishing promise!
What is John referring to? The testimony of eyewitness accounts (see the beginning of chapter 1) that Jesus was the Christ/Messiah, God become one of us. If we accept these eyewitness accounts and hold on to them, we are brought into relationship with him ourselves – and through him with the Father – just as he promised. I find it interesting that John goes on to describe this as eternal life. To us perhaps that phrase speaks of limitless time or life, but to John the key thing is not living forever, but living with God.
