1 John 2:26-27
26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. 27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.
Yesterday we thought about the importance of the eyewitness testimony that teaches us about Jesus (the ‘what you have heard from the beginning’ of verse 24) which we find in the Bible. Today John reminds us that we don’t just have the Bible to help keep our relationship with God on track, we have the Spirit too, who takes the teaching of the Bible and applies it personally into our lives and context in living ways. Both parts are vital! It has been said that all Word and no Spirit we dry up, all Spirit and no Word we blow up, but Word and Spirit we grow up.
Father, thank you for your Word and Spirit who speak to us and lead us in our relationship with you. Help us develop the discipline to listen to what both are saying – and respond.
