Matthew 4:23 (NIVUK)
23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and illness among the people.
On Sunday we were thinking about how the resurrection might be good news. This isn’t the first time something is called good news in the New Testament. Twice Matthew has this verse, here at the start of Jesus’ public ministry, and then in Matthew 9:35, just before he chooses and sends out the disciples. The good news is that God’s Kingdom is near and is coming, the kingdom being where lives are lived out as God meant them to be lived, lived in faithful relationship with him. Just as the resurrection demonstrates that God’s Kingdom is near, and that all that Jesus had been saying was true, so it is here: Jesus proclaims the Kingdom and then shows it in his actions.
Spirit, help us to share the good news of Jesus this week, and to back up our words by how we live.
