Bible Notes

Luke 2:29-34 (13.12.22)

Luke 2:29-34 (NIVUK)
29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favour with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus…
34 ‘How will this be,’ Mary asked the angel, ‘since I am a virgin?’

Theologically, this is important as it suggests Jesus doesn’t inherit Adam’s brokenness. Scripturally, it is important as Isaiah predicted that a child would be born of a young woman or virgin who was Immanuel, or God with Us (Is. 7:14). Humanly speaking, it was important as the miracle of the virgin birth makes it clear that something special is happening here – God is at work.

Jesus, Immanuel, thank you for bursting into our lives, fully human and fully divine!
