John 20:13-15 (NIVUK)
…‘They have taken my Lord away,’ she said, ‘and I don’t know where they have put him.’ 14 At this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realise that it was Jesus.
15 He asked her, ‘Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?’
These short lines tell us even more about God’s compassion. Mary doesn’t even know it is Jesus standing in front of her, she thinks he’s the gardener, and yet he still shows interest, like the angels asking ‘why are you crying?’
Father, it is easy for us to show compassion to someone when we stand to get something out of it, or when in some sense we are being watched. It doesn’t always come so naturally when the recipient isn’t involved with us or paying us attention. We worship you because your compassion is consistent and unconditional! Spirit, help us to love like this.
