Mark 2:13 (NIVUK)
13 Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them.
The early chapters of Mark have Jesus in Galilee, where he is beginning to develop a reputation. He has just been in a house in Capernaum where a paralysed man has been lowered through the roof because it was the only way the man’s friends could get close to him, such were the number of people crowded around. Jesus had compassion on the man and healed him, but only after he had made a point of forgiving him, something that got quite a response as the Jews believed only God could forgive someone their sins. It’s not surprising them that as Jesus goes back out to the lake here, that a crowd quickly develops around him. Did they want to see him? To see a miracle? Hear great teaching? Or maybe to catch sight of someone who had made such a scandalous claim?
What is it about Jesus that attracts you to him – why would you join the crowd?
