3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people – 5 the faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven and about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel 6 that has come to you…
How can you tell if someone’s faith is real? Like a waterfall, it overflows into their actions. In these few verses we see such a cascade. It begins with the actions of Jesus, his faith in God and faithfulness towards us. His faith is the foundation of the Colossians’ ‘hope stored up for [them] in heaven’. His faith overflows as it is declared again and again in the gospel message, which they heard and believed in. This led to their faith in God, which in turn overflowed into their actions, their faith is shown in their love for others.
Father, may our lives also overflow, may our love for you be proved in our love of others.
