Matthew 16:15-18 (NIVUK)
15 ‘But what about you?’ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’
16 Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’
17 Jesus replied, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
We may be small, but Jesus promises growth. This growth is not based on a lineage traced back to Peter, or the strength of our faith or efforts, but on the subject of Peter’s declaration – the growth of the kingdom comes from Jesus, God’s Son sent to live amongst us and to usher in his salvation and life, God’s Kingdom.
Thank you Father that we can have certainty because of you and your Son. Accept our efforts to live a life of faith not as a way of ensuring your kingdom comes, but as a grateful response to the knowledge that it is here and is coming.
