Luke 1:38 (NIVUK)
38 ‘I am the Lord’s servant,’ Mary answered. ‘May your word to me be fulfilled.’ Then the angel left her.
‘Let your word to me be fulfilled,’ said Mary, but which word? It is easy to read this passage and hear Mary’s response as a humble act of obedience, ‘I’ll do whatever you want God’. I can’t help but feel that there is something more feisty to it. Which word? Could it be that she’s saying I’m trusting that you have favoured me, that you have chosen me, that you have said I matter and am important. Could it be that this is an expression of confidence in who she is in God’s eyes through his grace? Could it be that being a servant of the Lord is a big deal? And here’s the thing, God has also shown us favour, dare we believe it and what might that mean…
I am the Lord’s servant, may your word to me be fulfilled.
