Serving Jesus in Our Community

Bible Notes

Luke 1:54-55 (21.12.23)

Luke 1:54-55 (NIVUK)
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
remembering to be merciful
55 to Abraham and his descendants for ever,
just as he promised our ancestors.’

Earlier this week we thought about how God’s work through Mary has an impact through the generations all the way to us today. Today’s reading looks backwards, God’s action through Mary was consistent with how he had worked for and through his people since Abraham was first called all the way to her. Not only is it consistent with his previous work, it was the culmination of those earlier encounters, the calling of a people for himself was always meant to be so that one day through those people his Messiah, his Son, would be born.

Father, thank you that we don’t just celebrate the birth of a special baby at Christmas, but your faithful work through many generations leading up to that point, the salvation achieved through his son, and his impact on all generations that have followed, including our own. Help us to keep that big picture in mind.
