Hebrews 2:5-8 (NIVUK)
5 It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6 But there is a place where someone has testified:

‘What is mankind that you are mindful of them,
a son of man that you care for him?
7 You made them a little lower than the angels;
you crowned them with glory and honour
8     and put everything under their feet.’

Like last week’s passage, Hebrews 2:5-18 is full of Old Testament quotes and allusions. It opens with this quote from Psalm 8, which in turn reminds us of Genesis 1-2 and their creation stories. Psalm 8 talks of the astonishing, inspiring and seemingly endless universe that we live in and how it points to the even more astonishing, powerful and eternal God behind it, and asks the obvious question of why such a God should notice us, let alone care for us. But he does. Stop and think about that for a moment. He does, setting us apart (the meaning of being ‘holy’) to govern the world that he has put us in, treating us more like angels than just ‘mere’ animals.

What a privilege to be noticed by you, to be lifted up by you given such a responsible task! Help us Father to take seriously the task you have given us, and to be good stewards of your wonderful creation.
