This week we’re going to be tracing Sunday’s theme of rest through the passages and stories that Hebrews 4 alludes to.
Genesis 2:1-2 (NIVUK)
Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
I love these verses. For some reason they always conjure up the image in my mind of a contented God crashed out on a deck chair on the beach with a hanky on his head! I hope he will forgive me… These two verses look back at what God has done: over six days he has created the universe and everything in it, and after each day’s effort we heard the refrain that he looked at what he had done and it was good. Now he looks back over all he has achieved with the satisfaction of a job done and done well.
Father, there is something wholesome about feeling exhausted because you’ve been working hard and have achieved something good. I guess in that we are echoing your satisfaction with your creation. Today we join you in celebrating your works.
