Luke 19:37-40 (NIVUK)
37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
38 ‘Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!’
‘Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!’
39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, ‘Teacher, rebuke your disciples!’
40 ‘I tell you,’ he replied, ‘if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out’.
Yesterday we spent some time reflecting on what that final line about stones crying out means. Another phrase that struck me during the week was verse 37 which tells us that the crowd came excited and celebrating because of the miracles they had seen Jesus performing. Were they there simply because they wanted to see more, to be entertained, or were they they because they recognised through these encounters something of whom Jesus was? Luke doesn’t dismiss their sincerity, which makes me wonder if it is the latter. People don’t tend to come to faith because of a well presented outline of our beliefs, they come because in some way God has broken into their lives.
In what ways has Jesus come riding into your life? Join the crowd in celebration.
