John 21:1-3 (NIVUK)
1 Afterwards Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. 3 ‘I’m going out to fish,’ Simon Peter told them, and they said, ‘We’ll go with you.’ So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
A group of men who had grown up together, experienced life with Jesus together, shared that sense of loss when he died, and then the excitement and awe when he rose again. With all this behind them it is no wonder that they’re together at this moment and decide to join Peter when he decides to go fishing. There’s something about being part of God’s people. Through Jesus we have been brought together, disparate people, but family, united by a common love; this snapshot of fellowship is one that is repeated wherever God’s people are found.
Thank you Father for this weekend and the joy of being together. Thank you for Joe and Elizabeth who joined us from our church in Sheppey. Help us to nurture and celebrate this, our family.
