John 14:25-27 (NIVUK)
25 ‘All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
I don’t have a great recollection, especially for names and dates – thankfully I know people who will help me out if I need a quick reminder (if I ever forget your name or birthday, forgive me, it’s nothing personal!) God knows that I’m not alone, he designed our brains and knows their limitations. Thankfully, one of the reasons he gave us the Spirit is so to remind us of what what Jesus said. He might do this by stirring our thoughts, through others, and of course through the Bible which he inspired and speaks through today. So don’t panic if you’re not the sort who can remember chapter and verse, join me and give thanks that the Spirit is there to help us.
Spirit, thank you for your reminders! Help us to recognise your voice when you speak, so that we might remember what Jesus taught us and, in faith, respond.
