John 4:34-38 (NIVUK)
34 ‘My food,’ said Jesus, ‘is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. 35 Don’t you have a saying, “It’s still four months until harvest”? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. 36 Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. 37 Thus the saying “One sows and another reaps” is true. 38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labour.’

On Tuesday, I took the day out to take my Mum to an important hospital appointment. It was a long day. By the end of the day I was a meal short, the timings of various bits and pieces didn’t quite work out, but that didn’t matter as the most important thing – getting Mum to her appointment – happened. In today’s passage, something similar is going on. Jesus is saying that to him, his top priority is sharing God’s invitation with the people around him; other things might be valuable, but this comes first. Reading this got me thinking, how high on my list of priorities does talking about Jesus, and sharing his invitation, come?

Father, help me to realign my priorities with what really matters.
