Matthew 5:38-42 (01.03.22)

Matthew 5:38-42 (NIVUK)
38 ‘You have heard that it was said, “Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.” 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

Moses introduced the idea of ‘an eye for an eye’ to try and prevent feuds escalating – something that feels painfully relevant right now. The trouble with an eye for an eye is that it is still violence conducted in two directions, and still potentially ongoing, it doesn’t end violence. This is where practising forgiveness is so powerful, forgiveness might be risky, it can be abused, but it also offers the possibility for the chain to be broken and peace to break out.

Thank you Jesus that you turned the other cheek, that through the cross, you refused to strike us back so peace could be won. Help us to offer forgiveness and peace as you did.
