Genesis 12:11-13 (21.09.22)

Genesis 12:11-13
11 As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, ‘I know what a beautiful woman you are. 12 When the Egyptians see you, they will say, “This is his wife.” Then they will kill me but will let you live. 13 Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you.’

As they entered Egypt, Abram was concerned about how the Egyptians would treat him, fearful that his life might be at risk because of the beauty of his wife. As Noel pointed out on Sunday, this says a lot about the view of women in the culture of that day as commodities to be possessed – Abram doesn’t seem all that concerned about what might happen to Sarai, and it would seem from the Egyptians’ reputation that they weren’t much different. But this isn’t how God sees women. God made all in his image, views all as equal, as Galatians 3:28 tells us, ’28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.’

Father, it would be all too easy to condemn Abram for thinking this way, but no doubt I have my own blind spots and prejudices. Reveal these to me and help me to change. Help me to see all as equal in your sight.
