Genesis 15:1 (NIVUK)
After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision:
‘Do not be afraid, Abram.
I am your shield,
your very great reward.’
We often talk about or pray for God’s protection, so although I’ve never used a shield in combat, this feels familiar, but the idea of God being a very great reward does seem odd. It seems backwards, how can God be our reward? What is there that we could do to earn him? Abram may have shown great faith and obedience at times, but do even his actions reach the heights that might deserve such a reward? But this is the wonder of God’s grace. Out of his love for us, he has rewarded us with grace and so many wonders through Christ.
Thank you Father (and being able to call him that is a great reward) for the love and grace you have poured on us through your Son and his Spirit.
