Genesis 15:2-5 (NIVUK)
2 But Abram said, ‘Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?’ 3 And Abram said, ‘You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.’
4 Then the word of the Lord came to him: ‘This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.’ 5 He took him outside and said, ‘Look up at the sky and count the stars – if indeed you can count them.’ Then he said to him, ‘So shall your offspring be.’
Our horizons are limited by what we have experienced and know, which is why travel, and reading, and making new relationships are so valuable, these each expose us to new things and widen our horizons. Abram’s horizons meant that as far as he could see he wasn’t going to have a child of his own. God’s vision, however, encompasses the whole of creation, all of geography and time and culture. He can truly see what can be, can see all possibilities and angles. Indeed, he knows just how many stars there are. Abram couldn’t see a way forward, but God could – as he can for you too.
Are there areas in your life where you can’t see the way forward? Know that God can, and ask him to lead you and to help you follow.
