Luke 1:5-7 (22.11.22)

Luke 1:5-7 (NIVUK)
5 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.

Zechariah is a priest, someone whose task was to stand between God and people, speaking on behalf of each party to the other. Elizabeth, whilst not a priest, is of Aaron’s family, the priestly family. They’re also doing all the right things, in that sense they’re righteous. However, they are caught out later when God speaks to them, they weren’t expecting that…

Father, we’re also called to be priests today. Forgive us for when we expect you to be silent. Help us to be ready and open to hearing you speak so we can pass your message on.
