Luke 2:26-28 (NIVUK)
26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, ‘Greetings, you who are highly favoured! The Lord is with you.’
It was a time of extraordinary things. Elizabeth, too old to have a child, is having a child, and an angel appears to a young woman in Nazareth of all places! The angel’s message is extraordinary too. Maybe we might say we are God’s, that we follow him or are with him, the angel proclaims the opposite – God is with Mary.
This is the heart of the Christmas story, astonishingly God has chosen to be with us.
