1 John 4:13-16 NIVUK
13 This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: he has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Saviour of the world. 15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. 16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.
It’s amazing how easy it is to skip past verses without really reading them. I think I must have done this with verse 16. I’d read it, of course I had, many times, but today, perhaps for the first time, I read it and took it in. We know… the love God has for us. We… rely on the love God has for us. A small sentence, but both of it’s parts are profound. We know – this is more than merely intellectual, although it is that as well, it is an experience of, a relationship, something tangible. We rely – and we’re back where David took us on Sunday, that realisation that we need to allow God to be our ‘driver’, to guide and lead us. Without him, and his love, what are we? But with!
Jesus, thank you that I know your love. Help me to learn to rely on it.
