Last week was Halloween with its emphasis on the ‘dark side’ to borrow a phrase from Star Wars. This week’s Bible Notes offer a contrast by looking at the theme of Light.
John 1:1-4 NIVUK
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
If you listen to the news right now, it can seem as if the world is a very dark place. Inevitably, the impression we get is compounded by the bias in the media to reporting bad news but not good, and setting up interviews in a combative way, but there is no getting away from it, there are some very bleak things going on right now. Today’s passage offers hope. It reminds us that in the incarnation, Jesus, the Light, came into the world, and the entire sum of the our darkness could not extinguish him.
Lord, shine your light in our lives and in the dark situations in our world today.
