Hebrews 1:1-3 (NIVUK)
1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word…
Wow, what a description of Jesus to hold alongside that of the fragile newborn babe of Bethlehem whose birth we recently celebrated. This child, this person, whilst absolutely one of us in every way other than our brokenness or sinfulness, is also absolutely God. Just as John alludes to in his opening chapter, Jesus radiates God’s glory in a way we can see and apprehend, safe and yet not safe. He is the exact representation of the Father, his character and will is the Father’s: understand God through him. He is our breath, the source of our life and that of all of creation. This is Jesus, and this is who our God is.
Spirit, help me to see Jesus clearly and deeply, so that I can through him see our Father more clearly and deeply too.
