Ephesians 5:13-14 (NIVUK)
13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible – and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. 14 This is why it is said:
Wake up, sleeper,
rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.

Taking an honest look at ourselves as these verses have been encouraging, can be a difficult thing. We’ll like some of what we’ll see, but not everything. Some of the things that aren’t so great will be easy to change once we recognise what’s going on, but other things are much harder to change, and it can be easier to hide our heads in the sand (or continue sleepwalking, v.14) and pretend that all’s well. But here’s the great thing, not only does bringing things into the light of God and his ways reveal our behaviours for what they are, good and bad, but verse 13 seems to suggest that his light has transformative power, when it shines on us it turns our darkness into light! The Gospel isn’t a message of self-improvement, although we do what we can, it’s a message of God-improvement!

Shine you light on me, Lord, and chase away my darkness.
