Bible Notes

John 5:30 (03.08.23)

John 5:30 (NIVUK)
30 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.

Having PAUSED, REJOICED and ASKED, today we YIELD. Today’s verse was spoken by Jesus, revealing his life of submission, seeking primarily not to please himself, but to please his Father. Earlier in the chapter he said, ‘Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does‘ (John 5:19). Prayer has a two way dynamic: we pray to seek change, but as we pray, we also open ourselves to being changed as we discover God’s will (see yesterday’s note) and are aligned to it.

Spirit, following Christ’s example, help me to yield to the Father’s will in all that I do today.
